View Setting
This story involves a full dive VR game. That means the story revolves around a video game where the senses of the player act just like they would if they were really there.
The Ascent is a team based game and therefore this story will have a minimum of typically 5 other characters. While players can start the game with a friend or two any open spots will be filled by the game, meaning the players often start not knowing each other.
The Ascent is a survival game involving exploring many untamed biome types. There is no risk to the player, but due to the realism of the game its players have to deal with things like finding food, water, and shelter.
The roleplay involves a male getting the worlds first full dive video game. Since it requires brand new expensive technology, he may have won the game, spent his savings on it, or been given it as a gift. Each player needs their own copy of the game and hardware.
The maker of the game, VirtuLab, runs Virtual World which is the most popular game. Because of this and the expected shortages of hardware units, the company has chosen not to advertise it's release and only announced the game one month before launch with units going on sale that day. It was sold out within minutes. Because of this players know almost nothing about the game other then it being "The most realistic VR MMORPG." They aren't even aware it is full dive or that the technology exists.
This means new players will enter the game with no knowledge of the game. This works well for a role play since the mechanics of the game don't have to be known at the start and can become known as the characters learn them.
A team consists of six players. There is a "friend code" that can be shared to ensure certain players can game together, but any open spots the game will fill with other players. Players are matched based off a set of questions at setup. The game will then try to create a balanced team with people who are most likely to play the same amount of time and at the same times. Players cannot join a team once created and once in a team you cannot join another team.
